Lux 9 works on the traditional territories of the Anishinaabeg, the Haudenosaunee, the Wendat, and the Tionontati — known to themselves as the Betan, the People Among the Hills. The hills in that name are the same hills we work in.

These lands were the subject of Treaty 18, the Lake Simcoe-Nottawasaga Purchase of 1818, and the Williams Treaties of 1923 — agreements whose full weight, including the harvesting and fishing rights they stripped without consent, the federal government did not formally acknowledge until 2018. We also recognize the Métis people, whose historic community along the Georgian Bay shoreline is an enduring part of this place.

Our practice is built on the belief that land carries meaning — ecological, cultural, and communal — and that decisions about land require honest negotiation between everyone who holds a stake in it. We carry this acknowledgement as an orientation: toward the nations who have always known these lands, and toward the work of understanding what genuine stewardship requires of us.
